My Charity Pals

See how you’ve helped out some of my friends!

Guide Dogs for the Blind

In 2006, Andrex® worked alongside Guide Dogs for the Blind to help raise lots of money for the charity.

Andrex® even made a special version of me, all dressed up in my very own training jacket!

By ordering your own Guide Dog Puppy, you helped our Guide Dog friends lead the way to independence for thousands of blind and partially-sighted people.

For every Andrex® Guide Puppy sold, at least £1.50 went to Guide Dogs for the Blind or Irish Guide Dogs.

You helped raise an astonishing £254,447.59 for Guide Dogs for the Blind!

Teenage Cancer Trust

Every single day in the UK, six teenagers are told they have cancer. And this figure is rising all the time.

Teenage Cancer Trust knows that young people have a much better chance to beat their cancer if they are treated by experts in teenage cancer and in an environment where they can relax and be themselves.

So, the charity is working to build special units especially for teenagers with cancer inside NHS hospitals. They aren’t like adult or children’s cancer wards but have been designed to give teenagers the very special space and care they need to concentrate on getting well again.

In 2008, to help them reach that vital goal, Andrex® teamed up with pop group McFly to support Teenage Cancer Trust. By buying an Andrex® Winter Puppy, you played an important part in helping them get there!

To date, you helped raise over £140,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust, at least £1.50 from each Puppy sold was donated. A fantastic achievement!

As well as helping Teenage Cancer Trust to build these exceptional hospital units, your money helps in other ways too:

Support: When a young person is diagnosed with cancer, their family needs support too. Teenage Cancer Trust gives mums, dads, brothers and sisters the chance to meet other people who understand their situation.

Research: Teenage Cancer Trust funds the UK’s only dedicated Professor of teenage cancer medicine who leads research into why young people get cancer and how best to treat it, ultimately improving diagnosis, treatment and survival.

Educating young people: Teenage Cancer Trust’s education and awareness programme aims to educate young people about cancer, prevention and healthy living, empowering them to take control of their own health.

Educating the professionals: the charity also funds courses for medical professionals, so they can better understand and treat young people with cancer.

Sharing: Teenage Cancer Trust organises an annual conference specifically for young people with cancer, giving them the chance to share experiences and learn more about their disease.

So far, only 4 out of 10 teenagers diagnosed with cancer will be able to count on this special treatment. That’s why Teenage Cancer Trust’s aim is that, by 2012, absolutely every teenager who needs it will receive it.

Dogs for the Disabled

These guys are probably our newest friends, but they are doing some great work! Dogs for the Disabled is a charity that trains dogs to carry out a range of practical tasks to assist disabled children and adults in order to achieve greater independence. The charity also provides a programme to support families with a child with autism. Since 1988 the charity has trained over 400 partnerships.

An assistance dog acts as a great ice-breaker enabling our clients to break out of the social isolation that is often experienced through disability. Every dog is trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening doors or retrieving dropped items that may have rolled out of reach such as car keys, a mobile phone or an inhaler. It’s really quite amazing what they can do!

So far, we’ve raised £518 for Dogs for the Disabled, at an event we ran at an ASDA store. We’d love to hear from you on what you think we could do to raise more money for Dogs for the Disabled in the future, so please click here to contact us.

Look Good Feel Better

Look Good...Feel Better (LGFB) is a national charity supported by the cosmetic industry, which offers free confidence-boosting skincare and make-up workshops for women undergoing cancer treatment. LGFB was set up by the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) and gained charitable status in 1993. Today the Programme has the support of over 40 leading companies and brands in the Beauty Industry.

The Look Good... Feel Better workshops help combat the visible side effects of cancer treatment and, in turn, improves confidence and wellbeing. Hosted by trained beauty consultants from all the major cosmetic companies, the sessions are held at 56 hospitals/cancer care centres across the UK. Patients are given a gift bag filled with donated cosmetic products and taken through a specially designed 12-step skincare and make-up regime. After two hours of learning, fun and laughter, ladies leave feeling relaxed and full of renewed confidence in their appearance.

Reaching out to every woman diagnosed with cancer...

2009 marks the 15th Anniversary of Look Good...Feel Better in the UK and a major new initiative has been created to help LGFB achieve its ultimate aim of 'reaching out to every woman diagnosed with cancer in the UK'. The LGFB Confidence Kit is an extensive DVD and booklet presented by experts in skincare, make-up, wigs, scarves and nail care. All the information included has been built up through 15 years of supporting cancer patients all over the world.

Andrex® is supporting LGFB by selling Andrex® Shea Butter Knickers to support the launch of our newest product, Andrex® Shea Butter. Watch this space to see how much we’ve raised.
